Andrew Ackroyd is a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon who works on Holby City Hospital's Darwin Ward.
Biography[]
On 26 January 2019, Andrew was brought down to the emergency department to assess Ernest Maxwell who had a suspected thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm; given Ernest's homelessness and low prospects of recovery, Andrew deemed him a "lost cause" and refused to operate. However, when senior staff nurse Louise Tyler later informed him that she had found Ernest a place in residential rehabilitation for him to recuperate and booked him into the pre-op clinic for Jac Naylor to operate on him, Andrew eventually reconsidered. On 16 February, Andrew prepared to operate on Ernest, but he was forced to postpone it several times due to new emergency cases. Later that day, a theatre slot was made available, but Ernest's aneurysm ruptured, killing him before he could leave the ED. (CAS: Episode 1115)
