Casualty, stylised as CASUAL+Y, is a British medical drama that airs on BBC One. Having been on the air for over 30 years, it is the longest-running prime time medical drama in the world. It was created by Jeremy Brock and Paul Unwin and was first broadcast on 6 September 1986. The programme is set in the fictional city of Holby and focuses on the staff and patients at Holby City Hospital's emergency department.
Casualty's exterior shots were primarily filmed outside the Ashley Down Centre in Bristol from 1986 until 2002 when a dedicated exterior set was built at Lawrence Hill Industrial Park. In 2009, it was confirmed that production of Casualty would move to Cardiff. The show moved to a purpose-built studio and set at Roath Lock in 2011.
In 1999, a spin-off drama series named Holby City began airing on BBC One. In 2007, HolbyBlue, a police drama also based in Holby, was broadcast for the time; the series was axed the following year.
