David Hopkins (1962/1963 - 5 December 2017) was a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon and the husband of neurosurgeon Roxanna MacMillan.

After winning the research funding, Roxanna noticed that David was able to recall past operations and incredibly obscure medical jargon when placed within a clinical setting, so she abandoned the project and told David that he was not a viable candidate. However, on 5 December 2017, David began showing signs of aggression, and nurse Ben "Lofty" Chiltern noticed him stumbling while asking for some notes. As David was observing neurosurgeon John Gaskell - a friend from university - and cardiothoracic surgeon Jac Naylor operate, he began to suffer a stroke. It was soon discovered that David had a patent foramen ovale, and he was taken to one of the theatres on Darwin for surgery. (HC: "Group Animal - Part One")

As Ollie operated on David, Fredrik Johanssen entered the hospital with a rifle, and the hospital was put on lockdown. Despite Morven Digby's concerns, Ollie and Roxanna insisted on prioritising David's care and pressed on. However, Fredrik soon gained access to the theatre and shot Ollie in the head. Roxanna took over David's procedure and proposed aspirating his carotid artery, but Morven told her that, as David was having a cerebral haemorrhage, there was nothing they could do for him, and she urged Roxanna to focus on saving Ollie. Roxanna eventually agreed, but David's heart began fibrillating. Realising that her husband was gone, a heartbroken Roxanna advised Morven to stop and pronounced David dead.
