Synopsis

Dylan is leaving work on the night of Christmas Eve as Rash asks him to return to help in resus. David, who has just arrived, is surprised that Dylan is working over the festive season.

Meanwhile, as the clock strikes midnight, security guards Joe and Alun share a tender moment together and are about to express their feelings for each other as the intruder alarm sounds. They both rush to the scene and find a man frantically trying to break into the industrial alarm system. Joe rushes over to subdue the intruder but the latter is electrocuted and blown away into a glass panel with Joe and Alun.

Back at the ED, agency nurse Amy is sent to work in cubicles by Louise. However, her partner, Laurie, is impatient and confronts her in a cubicle. It turns out that they are both planning to steal one of the hospital's rapid infusers. Louise finds the pair and Amy pretends that Laurie is a patient.

As Dylan prepares to go home, he is dragged back into resus when Alun and the intruder are taken in. While the team attempt to treat both patients, Amy enters and asks for assistance with Laurie; Rash suspects that he is having a heart attack and sends him to resus 2. Dylan continues to treat Alun whose leg is beginning to haemorrhage due to a severed artery. He manages to stop the bleed and requests a rapid infuser. Shortly after, Joe is wheeled into resus.

Next door, Laurie begins to have second thoughts and tries to leave, not wanting to end up in prison. However, he is forced to resume the facade as Rash returns to check up on him. Rash is unsure what is wrong with Laurie and orders an X-ray and tests to find out. Gemma expresses her concerns about Amy's behaviour to Rash. When Rash asks Dylan for a second opinon and gives him a dose of morphine, Laurie caves and admits that he's faking his symptoms, provoking a scolding from Dylan.

Dylan informs Joe that his brother-in-law, George, has arrived. He talks to Joe and Alun and mentions that Joe is in a relationship with a woman, upsetting Alun. Joe tries to explain himself but Alun tells him that tonight is his final shift and that he is moving to the coast. However, he begins to experience a panic attack.

Jacob starts treating the intruder who has amnesia. He looks through the man's belongings and learns that he was recently staying at a homeless shelter. After speaking to the shelter, Jacob finds out that the man is called Robby. After finding a picture of his daughter in his bag and with help from David, Jacob uncovers his surname. However, he soon discovers that Robby was experiencing a nervous breakdown as a result of his wife and daughter being killed in a car accident. Dylan advises Jacob not to inform him of their passing yet but Robby soon goes into VF. Dylan and Jacob manage to stabilise him temporarily but he crashes again. Jacob desperately tries to revive him but his efforts are fruitless - Robby is pronounced dead during the early hours of Christmas Day. Shaken up by the ordeal, Jacob calls Blake to wish him a happy Christmas.

Joe begins to experience chest pains. George tries to comfort him and tries to call his girlfriend but Joe admits that she doesn't exist and he really has feelings for a man.

Meanwhile, Gemma learns from the nursing agency that Amy is a hospice nurse and informs the team in resus with Noel. As Joe begins to haemorrhage, Rash cannot find the rapid infuser, leading Gemma to conclude that Amy and Laurie have stolen it. Gemma finds the pair as they attempt to drive away and implores them to return the equipment.

Alun returns from a scan as Dylan continues to treat Joe. As Dylan becomes increasingly exasperated at the hopelessness of the situation, Gemma and Noel barge into resus with the rapid infuser, allowing him to save Joe's life. After stabilising, he and Alun reconcile, and confess their love for each other.

In reception, Gemma persuades Noel to give the donation money he had accumulated to the hospice Amy works for. Rash then tells her that he wants to spend Christmas Day with her instead of his parents; the happy couple kiss under a bunch of mistletoe.

Outside the ED, Dylan asks David if he could open and read a letter he received from Ciara. With tears in his eyes, Dylan tells him how much he misses her and accepts his invitation to join him for a Christmas dinner. Template:Series 33
