Synopsis[]

Rash is taken by surprise when his sixth-form track-and-field coach Adil Saifi, who was training Rash to compete on a national level, is admitted to the ED with an injured arm. Rash is concerned about Adil's unkempt and jaundiced appearance and follows him when he tries to leave the building, but Adil claims that he has pancreatic cancer which he sees no point in treating and leaves to drink himself to death at the pub. Rash finds that Adil's blood test results suggest that he likely does not have cancer and tries to encourage Adil out of the pub, but Adil reveals that his main reason for drinking is his failures in life, such as pushing Rash too hard and causing the injury that ended his career as a runner. However, Rash admits that the injury was caused by a hangover and tells Adil that the lessons he taught him got him through medical school. As Rash extends a hand to Adil and promises to help him get through his turmoil, Adil collapses in agony, but his pain turns out to be originating from a large gallstone obstructing his common bile duct, meaning that Adil is not dying. After arranging a place in detox for Adil, Rash tells him that he was a great coach, and Adil assures him that he did not let him down.

Bobby Stair — a patient with Alzheimer's — is admitted to the ED on her and her husband Ken's golden wedding anniversary. Faith is concerned by Ken's short temper and a series of bruises on Bobby's arm, but Iain is adamant that there is no cause for concern. When Ken experiences a sharp pain in his shoulder and hospitalised, Faith suspects that it is angina and recommends respite care for Bobby while he stays in hospital for a few nights. Ken admits that he has been struggling to cope with Bobby's worsening symptoms and concedes that it cannot go on. Faith manages to find a space for Bobby in a residential home, but Ken is forced to make an immediate decision. Ken is devastated and gives Faith the go-ahead, but he and Bobby are given the opportunity to have their final anniversary meal, drink and dance before Bobby is collected. Inspired by Ken and Bobby, Faith asks Iain out for a drink, but she later changes her mind and decides to spend her evening with her children.

Tina is troubled by her memories of Nate when a man named Ted is taken into resus after coming off his motorbike. Tina tells Ted's fiancée Millie that he is in a stable condition, but Ted begins to rapidly deteriorate and soon dies which reminds Tina of Nate's final moments. Tina breaks the news to Millie who lambastes her for misleading her and robbing her of one last opportunity to be with Ted. Tina opens up to Jacob about her regrets about not saying goodbye to her brother; Jacob wishes that things were different, but he encourages Tina to share her grief with Millie. After Millie acknowledges that Tina is not at fault, Tina tells her about Nate and offers her support with her bereavement; Millie tells Tina that she is glad that she was with Ted at the end. At the end of the day, Jacob praises Tina for her resillience, but she claims that the situation with Ted and Millie has made her realise that Nate died alone.
