'''Ewart Plimmer''' (died 7 October 1988) was the inspiration behind the Casualty nightshift when it began in 1986. The old man with the white moustache was a friend to his staff but could be very stern and short tempered with administrators. He rarely got involved in clinical work. He would sit listening to his walkman in his office and seemed to be constantly interrupted. His wife Ros left him during the first series because he was spending too much time in Casualty. Then he had a romance with administrator Elizabeth Straker, but just as it was looking like they might live happily ever after, Straker took off to the USA before the start of the third series. Her replacement Valerie Sinclair was soon at loggerheads with Ewart over the closing of the observation ward. Ewart got his way and ironically, in the very place that he'd been fighting to keep open he suffered a massive heart attack in the observation ward and died, just minutes after comforting a distraught [[Megan Roach|Megan]]. The staff mourned and it was left to Charlie to take over the helm of running the department.

Ewart Plimmer (died 7 October 1988) was the inspiration behind the Casualty nightshift when it began in 1986. Her replacement Valerie Sinclair was soon at loggerheads with Ewart over the closing of the observation ward. Ewart got his way and ironically, in the very place that he'd been fighting to keep open he suffered a massive heart attack in the observation ward and died, just minutes after comforting a distraught Megan. The staff mourned and it was left to Charlie to take over the helm of running the department.
