In July 2022, George Rainsford posted on Twitter that he had finished reading a "very consequential" episode of his character Ethan Hardy.[1] On 11 August, Rainsford cleared out his dressing room drawer.[2] In October, Rainsford revealed at the Huntington's Community Conference that he was "taking a short break" from Casualty to spend more time with his family and gave details about Ethan's exit storyline;[3] his departure was officially announced by Jon Sen in November.[4]
In September, it was reported that Nigel Harman had signed a one-year contract with Casualty to play a character named Max and was already filming scenes for his first episode.[5] Photographs posted online by other cast members showed Harman wearing consultants' scrubs.[6]
On 31 October, Jason Durr announced on his social media accounts that he was leaving the role of David Hide after six years on the show.[7]

Production[]
Having learnt from his tenure as executive producer of EastEnders that prospective viewers were often turned off by the lack of jumping-on points, Jon Sen decided to change the format of Casualty going into 2023. The decision was made to divide series 37 into "mini-arcs" of 12 episodes — with the first to begin airing in January ― and to move away from the guess-the-accident narrative format that Sen felt the show was "very famous for" and made it "too predictable" and inauthentic. With the latter, the series would now focus much more on the patients and how their lives would unfold once they were in the hospital.[4] On Twitter, Thomas Hescott confirmed that an episode he directed would mark the beginning of the first arc.[8]
