On 24 October, while Keller was cleaned up following a major incident exercise, Darwin covered all non-elective general surgical admissions. There, Jac and Joseph treated a patient with peripheral vascular disease named Richard who had attempted suicide by jumping into the docks. Jac was surprised when Joseph lost his temper with nurse Tricia Williams and soon found him unconscious in the staff room after he overdosed on fentanyl. Jac managed to reverse the effects of the drug and revive Joseph, but he insisted on no one finding out about the incident; Jac informed his father Charles regardless, but he reprimanded her for trying to "curry favour" with him and advised her to contact Joseph's superiors in future. Jac tried to apologise to Joseph, but he informed her that Elliot had barred him from operating for a week, and her intervention had not helped his relationship with his father. On 7 November, Jac treated a patient named Gareth Jenkins who had been injured in a cycling accident. When his father Arthur — a patient of Charles — was admitted for a heart transplant, Gareth begged Jac to have his heart donated only to Arthur if he died; Gareth was soon left brainstem dead, making him an ideal donor for Arthur. Joseph refused Jac's proposal of fulfilling Gareth's wish and wanted to comply with legal guidelines, but Charles was receptive of the idea and decided to go ahead with the transplant. After Jac convinced Joseph that their actions were morally right, the two decided to put their disagreements behind them. When Joseph mentioned that he was attending a Holby Cardiac Foundation get-together, Jac volunteered to pretend to be his girlfriend to attend the gathering and appease Charles. On 9 January 2007, Jac learned that there was a vacancy for a general secretary position at the Surgical Association, and Charles was on the selection committee. After Elliot's daughter Martha warned Joseph that Jac was using him for Charles' status, Joseph confronted her; she asserted that Martha was playing games with him. After Jac assured Joseph that she knew Martha initiated the kiss, the two had sex in the on-call room. Later, Joseph decided to withhold his application to focus on improving his surgical skills and recommended Jac to Charles. (HC: "The End of the World as We Know It")

In February, Jac took issue with Dan making Diane the on-call consultant, believing that she was far more qualified than her. While treating a convicted murderer named Philip Reid, Diane diagnosed Philip with acute sigmoid diverticulitis and wanted to take him into theatre as soon as possible, but Jac argued that his pain could have been caused by a sealed perforated ulcer and suggested ordering a CT scan or X-ray; Diane asserted that an ulcer would have been highly unlikely to develop alongside diverticulitis given Philip's age and history. Jac decided to order the scans anyway, but Philip soon developed haemoptysis and was rushed into theatre. Nevertheless, Jac and Diane discovered a large duodenal ulcer and signs of renal failure, leading them to believe that Philip was lying about the pain only developing earlier that day, and he had been overdosing on his prescribed diclofenac. Philip denied exceeding the stated dose and insisted that his daughter Kim was not responsible either. However, while left unattended, Philip left his bed and prepared to kill himself by electrocuting himself with a defibrillator. After she and Kim failed to talk Philip out of shocking himself, Jac tried to physically intervene but was electrocuted and knocked unconscious; she survived with only a mild concussion. === Leaving Joseph for Charles ===

On 6 March, Jac was pleased to hear that Joseph had booked a holiday for them but was quickly left underwhelmed when he told her that it was a walking holiday in Yorkshire. Later, Jac volunteered to speak to a cancer patient named Bruno March, whom she treated the year before, on behalf of Charles Byrne on AAU; Dan Clifford suggested that Jac was more interested in "greasing up the boss [Charles]" than taking care of Bruno. Joseph was suspicious of Bruno's "completely irrational" temperament and reasons for coming to the hospital and demanding to speak to a surgeon from Keller and urged consultant Lola Griffin to exercise caution while treating him. After Lola recommended that Jac stop treating Bruno, Jac confronted Joseph and told him that she was responsible for her own clinical decisions.

On AAU, Jac told Bruno that he did not qualify as a candidate for surgery due to his cancer's progression; Bruno was aware of his condition and asked Jac to take him "somewhere quiet". In the basement, Bruno explained to Jac that, after his cancer diagnosis, her keeping him company and giving him a copy of Great Expectations made him view Keller as a "sanctuary", and he had "come home to die". Meanwhile, after hearing that Jac did not turn up at her career review, Joseph began to panic and demanded security get involved. Once Jac and Bruno were found, Charles opined that Jac made the right decision to prioritise Bruno and agreed to reschedule her review. At Bruno's bedside, she told him that she no longer considered Joseph "useful" to her career and was considering dumping him, and she admitted that she was only keeping him company to impress Charles whom she saw as a "step-up". After Bruno died, Jac told Joseph that she did not think their relationship was going to work out and left him. However, when Charles claimed to be pleased for both her and Joseph and suggested that she could have had a positive influence on him, Jac decided to restart her relationship with Joseph. On 20 March, after HR received a call inquiring about a "Faye Wilson", Joseph feared that their activities in Dubai were about to become public knowledge, but Jac urged him to remain optimistic; Faye soon explained that her husband James was trying to contact her. After Charles approached Joseph about a patient named Ali Jarvis who had idiopathic cardiomyopathy and was awaiting a heart transplant, Jac recommended that Joseph try using an Oslo heart — a prototype assist device that supplemented the heart of the recipient — but Joseph felt that it carried too high a risk. Nevertheless, Jac approached Charles and Ali's father Miles with her idea, forcing Joseph to acquiesce and offer Ali the Oslo heart. Joseph confronted Jac for proposing the idea to his father without consulting him first, but she assured him that she and Charles were proud of him for his display of informed decision-making.

Once an Olso heart had been secured, Charles asked Jac to assist during the operation; Jac was delighted and invited Charles for a meal beforehand. Upon her return, Joseph told Jac that he did not believe her meal with Charles was appropriate; when he admitted that he was still sour about her proposal of the Oslo heart, she reaffirmed that she got "carried away" and suggested that they forget about it. Later, Faye voiced her concerns to Jac about her relationship with Charles and warned her that, at a "weak moment", Joseph could potentially tell Charles about what happened in Dubai. Jac promptly apologised to Joseph for her behaviour and asked for his forgiveness. Ultimately, the operation did not go ahead on account of Ali committing suicide by removing her ECMO cannulas.

Later that night, Faye was taken to a police station to make a statement after James was found dead in his apartment in Dubai, (HC: "Stargazer") and she was forced to disclose Jac and Joseph's activities there. (HC: "What Lies Beneath") The next day, the police visited Jac for a statement. Fearful of potentially losing her job, Jac confronted Faye about her secrecy surrounding James; Faye insisted on beginning a new life in Holby and begged for her and Joseph's help. Jac walked away, but Joseph offered to get her in touch with — and pay for — a solicitor. After rumours had been spread around the hospital following Joseph's interaction with the police, Jac prepared to tell Sam Strachan what happened in Dubai. However, after spotting Joseph, she lied about him being harangued by customs for carrying a suitcase filled with pornography. Despite Joseph believing that Faye was not responsible for James' death, Jac urged him to stop "pandering" to her and insisted that they had "done [their] bit". (HC: "Bedlam")

On 23 March, Joseph's parents wanted to invite him and Jac for lunch, but Joseph started to become worried when Jac did not answer his calls; he was later left indignant after finding out that she had a night-out with Sam. Wanting the ease the tension between them, Jac asked Sam to speak to Joseph, but he only exacerbated the situation. However, with some help from Diane, the two later reconciled. The following week, Dr Costello of the St Raphnel's Institute in Cincinnati was scheduled to lead an elective cholecystectomy at Holby City Hospital using telesurgery, with a Holby-based surgical team led by Dan Clifford on hand in the event of an emergency. Knowing that Charles Byrne was heavily involved, Jac was keen to assist, but Dan refused to allow her onto his team. While speaking to the patient, Alan Simpson, Jac learned that he had agreed to undergo telesurgery in exchange for the Cincinnati institute potentially providing treatment for his step-daughter Rosie's cancer. Jac reported Alan's comments to the team, but Alan quickly denied being blackmailed into the procedure.
  +
  +
After Rosie was admitted onto Darwin, Jac told Alan that he still had the right to postpone or cancel the operation if he wanted; Alan decided to stall it while waiting for Rosie's test results; the results showed that Rosie's cancer had spread to her brain and was terminal. Dan was furious with Jac for jeopardising the chances of the telesurgery going ahead, prompting her to attempt to persuade Joseph to provide Rosie's family with a second, more optimistic opinion on her prognosis. However, Joseph concurred with Elliot Hope's diagnosis and refused to lie for her. Desperate to convince Alan to proceed with the cholecystectomy, Jac told him and his wife Nora that Elliot had recently accompanied his wife Gina, who had motor neurone disease, to Switzerland to assist in her suicide, and she recommended that Alan have the surgery to secure a better chance of a second opinion on Rosie's condition. Alan decided to go through with the procedure, and Charles decided to reward Jac by allowing her onto the theatre team.

Following the operation, Joseph confronted Jac about her disclosing Gina's assisted suicide to the Simpsons; she insisted that she did it "for the good of science and [...] the hospital", but Joseph believed that her intentions were entirely self-serving and asked how low she was prepared to stoop to further her career. At a thank-you dinner at the Wyverly Hotel, Jac thanked Charles for allowing her onto the team; when he asked if she would have refused to participate if the operation's foundations were altruistic, Jac claimed that Joseph had asked a similar question earlier that day but was seemingly afraid of what her answer could have been. After telling Charles that she and Joseph had split up, Charles asked why a "beautiful, ambitious, brilliant young woman like [her would] be flirting with an old lord like [him]"; she told him that he might be "pleasantly surprised". Later, Jac was preparing to call for a taxi, but Charles asked her to "pleasantly surprise" him. Jac told him that people would question her motivations and declined Charles' offer, but she later returned and slept with him. (HC: "Paranoid Android")

In theatre, Jac reluctantly proceeded to insert Michael's aortic graft, but she felt that she was unable to complete the procedure and walked out. In a confrontation with Gaskell, she accused him of being unethical and feeding off the uncertainty of his colleagues, but Gaskell insisted on having the likes of Hanssen witness his work and urged her to help him. Upon their return, as Gaskell attempted to insert the tissue scaffold, Michael's artery of Adamkiewicz became unclipped, forcing Jac, who was on the verge of tears, to plug it with a pledget. Once the bleed stopped, Jac ran out of the room and broke down in Fletch's arms.

Jacqueline "Jac" Naylor MBBS MS FRCS (Eng) FRCSTh (born 31 March 1974) is a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon who works on Holby City Hospital's Darwin Ward.

Biography

Early life

During her childhood, Jac lived with several foster families who grew tired of her demeanour. According to her, she was ostracised at medical school for her talent, and her colleagues at the firms she worked at regularly considered her a threat. (HC: "Paranoid Android")

Arrival

On 21 November 2005, Jac - a locum registrar in general surgery - arrived on Holby City Hospital's Keller Ward to assist with performing a hemicorporectomy on Billy Finch, but Billy crashed his motorbike before undergoing surgery. Consultant Ric Griffin was forced to postpone the operation, and the multi-disciplinary team warned the surgeons that the hemicorporectomy would not be rescheduled due to its financial cost. Determined to allow the procedure to go ahead to impress her peers and secure a full-time placement at the hospital, Jac decided to break the rules and brought Billy's wife Melissa to the multi-disciplinary meeting. Swayed by Melissa's emotional appeal, the team decided to go ahead with the operation.

The next day, as fellow registrar Diane Lloyd was busy assisting on the Maternity Ward, Jac volunteered to assume her role in Billy's operation. Following the successful completion of the operation, Jac confronted Ric about her remaining on his surgical team full-time, but Ric declined. (HC: "Bird on a Wire")

On 17 January 2006, due to a shortage of beds at St James' Hospital, Jac returned to Keller with a patient with ulcerative colitis named Leon. Given Leon's copious rectal bleeding and the risk of colonic perforation, Jac believed that a subtotal colectomy was his best option, but Diane was more inclined to respect his wish not risk having him fitted with an ileostomy bag for the sake of his marriage and proposed performing a rigid sigmoidoscopy to investigate further; Diane asked Ric for his opinion, and he concurred with her.

Following the sigmoidoscopy, Diane was confident that surgery was unnecessary, but Leon perforated his bowel and was rushed into theatre. In surgery, Diane was still determined to avoid resorting to an ileostomy bag, but Jac deemed the bowel untenable and told her to staple Leon's rectal sigmoid junction; Diane conceded and went with Jac's approach, leading to Leon's recovery. (HC: "Yesterday Once More")

On 24 January, Jac learned from medical student Matt Parker that there was a vacancy for a permanent job on Keller and decided to apply for it. On the ward, Jac and Matt treated a patient named Gerry who was complaining of abdominal pain, and his test results showed that he was suffering from lead poisoning. When Gerry's X-ray showed the presence of a foreign body, Jac and Matt found that Gerry had been shot in the buttocks while serving in the Territorial Army. Once the bullet was removed, Jac expressed her interest in the vacant registrar job to Ric who was already pleased with her mentoring of Matt. (HC: "Brother's Keeper")

First permanent shifts

By 2 February, Jac had convinced Ric to give her the full-time registrar job. In theatre, Ric informed Jac that there was a vacant consultant post, and Jac expressed a keen interest in applying. Later that day, when Diane was struggling to control a firefighter's internal bleeding, Jac suggested performing a partial hepatectomy. Diane insisted that they wait for a consultant to arrive, but Jac claimed that she was familiar with the procedure. Diane allowed Jac to take over, but Jac failed to locate the source of the bleed and admitted that she had only read about the procedure. Furious, Diane ordered her to step away from the table and managed to stop the bleed with clamps. Out of theatre, after Jac attempted to impress Ric by taking credit for the procedure, Diane decided to challenge her for the consultancy. (HC: "I'll Be Back")

On 20 February, Jac attended an interview of the consultant post and was confident that she impressed the panel, but fellow registrar Sam Strachan warned her the next day that Diane appeared to be the favoured candidate. While Jac was in the lift, it suddenly ground to a halt, and she noticed blood dripping onto her patient notes. Above, Jac found a man named Billy whose arm had been severed and promised to find and reattach it. Once they were freed from the lift, Billy was rushed into theatre and stabilised. After finding his arm, Jac proceeded to reattach it, but Ric asked her to allow Diane to take over due to her expertise in vascular surgery, leaving Jac feeling cheated.

After the surgery, Diane was concerned about the poor blood supply to Billy's arm, but Jac asserted that she was being pessimistic and insisted on waiting for signs of improvement. However, when Billy's wife Jane's condition suddenly deteriorated, Billy hit his arm while attempting to stand by her bedside and damaged it further. In theatre, Diane contended that the attachment was compromised, but Jac insisted on redoing the anastomosis; Billy soon became septic, and the arm was deemed unviable. However, as Diane took over the operation, Ric arrived, and Jac allowed Diane to take the blame for endangering Billy's life. In the locker room, Jac took responsibility for the incident and admitted to Ric that she just wanted to impress him. Jac expected to be fired, but she was surprised when Ric praised her tenacity and assured her that both she and Diane would make fine consultants. Outside the hospital, Jac was taken aback when Ric introduced Nick Jordan as Keller's new consultant general surgeon. (HC: "Out on a Limb")

Conflict with Nick Jordan

On 14 March, Ric asked Jac to keep him informed of Nick's activities on Keller while he was at St James', suspecting that he would take an interest in Carlo Cominetti, a patient scheduled for an aortic valve replacement on Darwin presenting with a duodenal ulcer. When Carlo began to suffer from peritonitis, Jac confronted Nick about his decision to operate on Darwin and suggested that he would rather be a cardiothoracic surgeon than a general surgeon. After learning that Carlo had previously undergone a laparotomy, Jac warned Nick of the risk of scar tissue being a hindrance and threatened to tell Ric if he did not properly inform Carlo of the risks.

In theatre, Carlo developed aortic stenosis, and Nick decided to put him on bypass. Frustrated, Jac brought in cardiothoracic surgeon Connie Beauchamp, but Connie was impressed by Nick's adaptability and allowed him to assist on the valve replacement. After the surgery, Jac accused Nick of setting up the situation in theatre to impress Connie and get back into cardiothoracics, and Nick threatened to disclose her inexperience in the procedure if she reported his behaviour to Ric. Once Ric returned, Jac told him that there was nothing to report about Nick. (HC: "Let It Shine")

On 30 March, as Jac and Nick performed a laparotomy on a patient named Philip, Jac suggested that there may have been some trauma to his oesophagus; Nick posited that the air in Philip's mediastinum may have been caused by something further up and decided to investigate without getting cardiothoracics involved. Out of theatre, Jac criticised Nick's eagerness to attempt cardiothoracic procedures, but he reaffirmed his authority and told her to concentrate on refining her own skills. On the ward, Philip's condition began to worsen, so Jac decided to page someone from Darwin instead of Nick who was attending a cocktail party. Upon reviewing Philip's X-ray, registrar Joseph Byrne found a large tear to his tracheobronchial junction and rushed to Darwin for surgery.

Once Nick arrived in theatre, he berated Jac for not informing him of further complications to Philip's health and blamed her for the incident. Nick prepared to scrub up, but Connie reminded him that cardiothoracics was no longer his field. Afterwards, Nick informed Jac that Ric wanted to speak to her in the morning about her version of events. On Keller, Jac insisted that there was nothing more that she could have done for Philip, but Nick told her that Philip now required dialysis and a transplant due to the renal damage he sustained from hypoxia and hypotension. The following morning, Jac explained her actions to Ric, and Ric reminded her that she needed to confer with senior colleagues from her own department and work entirely off of facts. (HC: "Snake in the Grass")

On 18 April, Jac overheard Nick undermining Ric's clinical skills and professionalism to his patient Jenny following a failed small bowel transplant. She warned Ric about Nick attempting to "[carve] out his own niche" and urged him to consider the threat he posed to his career and his relationship with Diane. (HC: "Honesty") On 6 July, when Nick was vying for a cardiothoracic consultant post at St Luke's Hospital, Jac and Ric informed Lord Byrne and Connie that Nick was dismissed from St Damian's Hospital after his patient died from a swab being left inside of them. (HC: "The Truth Will Out") Despite the revelation, Nick was still offered the post and accepted it. (HC: "Extreme Measures")

Summer shifts

On 25 July, Jac treated a girl named Pheona who was experiencing severe stomach pains. After diagnosing her with peritonitis, Ric decided to take Pheona into theatre despite the staunch objections of her father George. However, as Jac and Ric operated, the theatre's air vents began leaking dust; Jac suggested moving Pheona, but Ric instead carrying on with the procedure and fitting Pheona with a colostomy bag, leading Jac to believe that he was rushing through the operation in order to cover Diane and Nick's waiting lists. Shortly after Pheona was taken back onto Keller, her surgical wound split open, and Jac found that Pheona's stitches were placed incorrectly. Jac confronted Ric about his waiting list decision, and he decided to reject the proposal. (HC: "Looking after Number One")

On 1 August, in Ric's absence, Jac was made the acting consultant on Keller. She and Joseph treated a patient named Mik Cronin who was impaled by a tree branch. Joseph insisted on ordering an aortogram to rule out any tears in Mik's descending aorta, but Jac was more concerned about his potentially fatal liver laceration. Mik ultimately opted for Jac's course of treatment and was taken straight to theatre. Joseph's concerns were soon proven right when an aortic tear was detected, and, with no bypass machine or available theatres on Darwin, they were forced to risk the condition of Mik's kidneys to fix the tear. Later, Jac praised Joseph's diagnostic skills and suggested working together again some other time. (HC: "Conscience")

Beginning of relationship with Joseph

(HC: "Before a Fall")

(HC: "Sins of the Fathers") On 14 December, Joseph felt that he and Jac had taken their fake relationship too far, but Jac asserted that she was not pretending and said that she wanted them to be a couple. A surprised Joseph was receptive of the idea, and the two shared a kiss. (HC: "Crossing the Line")

Operation in Dubai

The following week, Jac discovered that Joseph was accompanying Charles and a team of surgeons to Dubai to resect a bowel tumour and urged him to take her with him, but he did not feel that it was appropriate. Consequently, Jac decided to focus on impressing Dan Clifford in order to secure consultant Percy "Abra" Durant's old position on Keller. On AAU, she and new SHO Maddy Young treated a security guard named Jake who was allergic to anaesthetic and decided to employ hypnoanalgesia to ease him as they inserted an endoscope. Despite their success, Dan appointed Diane as the new locum consultant. Feigning tears, Jac told Joseph that she felt he did not believe in her, prompting him to call Charles about allowing her to assist in Dubai. (HC: "Face Value")

In Dubai, due to Charles being unable to perform surgery after contracting a virus, Jac and Joseph were forced to operate on Mohammed — the son of the wealthy Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Hashimi — with his personal nurse Faye Morton. However, they soon discovered that the tumour was larger than the scans led them to believe and had attached itself to the lower lobe of Mohammed's lung. They were forced to abandon the operation to reassess the situation; the en bloc resection was rescheduled for the following day. Joseph called the situation "madness" and believed that Mohammed would not survive, but Jac begged to differ and told Faye that everything was under control. After learning that Jac and Joseph were only registrars, Faye decided to report them, but Jac told her that they were Mohammed's last hope of survival.

The next day, the operation went ahead; Jac was tasked with resecting the tumour on Mohammed's bowel, and Joseph focused on the lung metastasis. When Mohammed's lung failed to inflate, Joseph asked Jac what he had done wrong, and she admitted that she lied about performing the operation before; fortunately, the issue was just the anaesthetist not removing the clamp from Mohammed's oxygen tube. With the operation ending in success, Ahmed agreed not to inform Charles of Joseph and Jac's actions and pay them £20,000 for saving Mohammed's life. Outside, Joseph confronted Jac about her lie, and she claimed that he would not have "hacked it" if she told him the truth. While on the way to the airport, Joseph became concerned when Faye did not return his call and asked the taxi driver to turn around. Once Joseph and Jac returned to Faye, the former helped her load her luggage into the taxi, and the three left Dubai for England. (HC: "What Lies Beneath")

On 30 January, Jac and Joseph asked Chrissie Williams to take Faye on as a bank nurse; although Chrissie was not responsible for hiring new nurses, she assumed there would not be any issues as long as Faye's paperwork was up to date. However, Jac explained that Faye was keen to keep her employment at the Dubai hospital off the record due to personal reasons; Chrissie stated that the bank would not tolerate it, but Mark Williams potentially might. When approached, Mark agreed to advocate for Faye but was suspicious of her desire to keep the details of her past job a secret. (HC: "Into the Dark")

(HC: "I Feel Pretty")

(HC: "The Borders of Sleep")

Seducing Lord Byrne

On 23 March, Joseph's parents wanted to invite him and Jac for lunch, but Joseph started to become worried when Jac did not answer his calls; he was later left indignant after finding out that she had a night-out with Sam. Wanting the ease the tension between them, Jac asked Sam to speak to Joseph, but he only exacerbated the situation. However, with some help from Diane, the two later reconciled. (HC: "Is There Something I Should Know?")

Hospital shooting

On 5 December 2017, the team of new neurosurgeon and Director of Surgical Innovation John Gaskell asked Jac to assist with operating on Michael Ambrose, a man with a spindle cell tumour that was compressing his spinal cord. On the ward, Ollie confronted Jac about her decision to offload all of her procedures onto him, but she ultimately ordered him to stand down during an aortic valve replacement. Ollie challenged her, and she bluntly told him that he lacked the "mettle, the drive" and the "ability", and would never have "even the slightest chance of saving [his] pathetic excuse of a career" if he continued to oppose her.

Later, in her office, Ollie told Jac that he felt "empty" on Darwin and ordered her to acknowledge his resignation. Despite her efforts to discuss Michael's case and the potential pitfalls of Gaskell's trial, Ollie insisted that she owed him an apology and suggested that she was "terrified". Sacha later attempted to express his concerns about Gaskell's reluctance to share his research amongst the medical community, but Jac, overridden with anxiety, sat outside the Darwin theatre, where she was consoled by Fletch.

Following a moment of clarity, Jac decided to leave Holby and apologised to Ollie, insisting that it was his duty to remain at the hospital and become the consultant he "should be". On the stairs, she bumped into Raf and asked him to hand Hanssen her letter of resignation. However, in the basement, Jac encountered Hanssen's son Fredrik who proceeded to shoot her in the back. (HC: "Group Animal - Part One") She was soon discovered by Sacha, Hanssen, Gaskell and Essie who rushed her into the wet laboratory.

Using breathing equipment from a teaching aid and chloroform as anaesthesia, Sacha reluctantly performed a thoracotomy on her and discovered that one of her major vessels had been injured. Gaskell proposed printing an experimental patch to stop the bleed, but Sacha vehemently disagreed and insisted on waiting for more equipment to arrive. However, with Hanssen having left to confront Fredrik, Sacha eventually allowed Gaskell to insert the matrix, and Jac's pulse soon returned. Once Fredrik was neutralised by armed police, and the hospital's lifts were reinstated, Jac was taken to ITU. (HC: "Group Animal - Part Two")

Personality

As the general surgical ward at St James' Hospital was being downsized, Jac was keen to impress Ric Griffin in order to acquire a permanent position on Holby City Hospital's newly-expanded Keller Ward (HC: "Bird on a Wire") and managed to convince him to give her the registrar job there. Her ambitions grew upon learning of a consultant general surgeon vacancy, and she began to take credit for her colleague's procedures after lying about having experience performing complex operations. (HC: "I'll Be Back") Fearing that fellow registrar Diane Lloyd was more likely to be given the job due to nepotism, Jac allowed Diane to take the blame for endangering a patient's life after reattaching an unviable arm. However, Jac felt guilty and eventually took responsibility for the incident. (HC: "Out on a Limb") Her sense of empathy also extended to recognising issues in her colleagues' private lives, as she realised that Ric possessed feelings for Diane and urged him to act on them before Nick Jordan could sully their relationship. (HC: "Honesty")

Jac suggests that she and Joseph work together again. (HC: "Conscience")

On 1 August 2006, Jac and Joseph treated an environmental protestor named Mik who had been impaled by a tree branch. Joseph insisted on ordering an aortogram to rule out any tears in Mik's descending aorta, but Jac was more concerned about his potentially fatal liver laceration. In theatre, an aortic tear was detected, and, with no bypass machine or available theatres on Darwin, they were forced to risk the condition of Mik's kidneys to fix the tear. Later, Jac praised Joseph's diagnostic skills and suggested working together again some other time. (HC: "Conscience")

On 24 October, Jac found Joseph unconscious in the Darwin staff room after he overdosed on fentanyl. Jac managed to reverse the effects of the drug and revive Joseph, but he insisted on no one finding out about the incident; Jac informed his father Charles regardless, resulting in Joseph being barred from operating for a week. Jac tried to apologise to Joseph, but he told her that her intervention had not helped his relationship with his father. (HC: "Before a Fall")

On 7 November, Joseph refused Jac's proposal of fulfilling Gareth Jenkins' wish to donate his heart to his father Arthur, but Charles was receptive of the idea and decided to go ahead with the transplant. (HC: "Sins of the Fathers") On 28 November, Jac told Joseph that she was happy about maintaining the facade and persuaded him to join her for a drink. (HC: "It's Been a Long Day")

On 14 December, Joseph intended to invite Jac to a gathering involving Charles and his peers, but she unwittingly declined. She soon noticed Joseph's friendship with Elliot Hope's daughter Martha and was disappointed to hear that Joseph had invited Martha instead. That evening, Joseph felt that he and Jac had taken their fake relationship too far, but Jac asserted that she was not pretending and said that she wanted them to be a couple. A surprised Joseph was receptive of the idea, and the two shared a kiss. (HC: "Crossing the Line") On 19 December, Joseph suggested that they spend Christmas with his parents in the Cotswolds, but, as Jac did not want to sleep with him, she claimed that she was not comfortable with his parents being in their vicinity and opted for a guest room; Joseph ultimately abandoned the idea. (HC: "The Good Fight") On 28 December, after Martha gave Joseph a Christmas present, Jac told him to "put things straight" with Martha. (HC: "The Very Thought of You") On 4 January 2007, after Jac's actions resulted in Martha cutting her hand on a vase, she informed Elliot of the incident, resulting in him catching Joseph and Martha kissing. (HC: "The Games People Play")

On 9 January, Dan Clifford approached Joseph about a general secretary position at the Surgical Association; Jac told Joseph that he was the perfect man for the job and encouraged him to apply for it. After Martha warned Joseph that Jac was using him for his family's status, he confronted Jac; she asserted that Martha was playing games with him. After Jac assured Joseph that she knew Martha initiated the kiss, the two had sex in the on-call room. Later, Joseph decided to withhold his application to focus on improving his surgical skills and recommended Jac to Charles. (HC: "The End of the World as We Know It")

The following week, Jac discovered that Joseph was accompanying Charles and a team of surgeons to Dubai to resect a bowel tumour and urged him to take her with him, but he did not feel that it was appropriate. Later, after Dan appointed Diane Lloyd as Keller's locum consultant, Jac — feigning tears — told Joseph that she felt he did not believe in her, prompting him to call Charles about allowing her to assist in Dubai; Jac was delighted when Charles gave her permission. (HC: "Face Value")

Charles Byrne

In October 2006, Jac found Charles' son Joseph unresponsive after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl. Despite Joseph's wishes, Jac informed Charles about the incident, but he reprimanded her for trying to "curry favour" with him and advised her to speak to Joseph's supervisors in future. (HC: "Before a Fall")

On 7 November, the son of Arthur Lewis — a patient of Charles' who required a heart transplant — suffered a catastrophic stroke and was left braindead, making him a prime candidate for donation. Despite Joseph's objections to the plan, Charles agreed with Jac and decided to perform the transplant. Later that day, as Charles believed that Jac and Joseph were a couple, and Jac wanted to attend the Holby Cardiac Foundation gathering, she agreed to pretend to be Joseph's girlfriend and accompanied him to the get-together. (HC: "Sins of the Fathers")

On 9 January 2007, when Joseph was approached about applying for a general secretary position at the Surgical Association, he ultimately decided to turn down the opportunity and instead recommended Jac to Charles. (HC: "The End of the World as We Know It") The following week, Charles allowed Jac to assist in a bowel tumour resection in Dubai. (HC: "Face Value")

Professional

Ric Griffin

Jac viewed Ric as one of the greatest surgeons in his field and was eager to work with him full-time. Following the successful hemicorporectomy in November 2005, Jac approached him about remaining on his surgical team, but Ric initially declined. (HC: "Bird on a Wire") When Jac locumed on Keller again in January 2006, Jac impressed Ric with her diagnostic skills and mentoring abilities, (HC: "Brother's Keeper") and she successfully secured a permanent job at Holby City. (HC: "I'll Be Back") When a consultancy was made available, Jac tried to impress Ric by reattaching a patient's arm, but the injury later became septic and nearly killed the patient. Regardless, Ric admired Jac's tenacity and believed that she would make for a fine consultant. (HC: "Out on a Limb")

In March, Ric asked Jac to keep an eye on Nick Jordan, who had a tendency to take over his cases in his absence, as he appeared to take a keen interest in his patient Carlo. (HC: "Let It Shine") Later that month, Ric reprimanded Jac after she failed to inform Nick of a patient's deterioration. (HC: "Snake in the Grass") In April, following an unsuccessful small bowel transplant, Jac overheard Nick attempting to soil Ric's reputation in front of the patient and warned Ric. (HC: "Honesty")

On 16 July, Jac felt that Ric was rushing through surgery to take on Diane and Nick's waiting lists and confronted him when his haste resulted in a patient's stitches being placed incorrectly; he ultimately decided to reject Bradley Hume's proposal of taking on the waiting lists. (HC: "Looking after Number One")

Diane Lloyd

Upon Jac's return to Holby City in January 2006, she and Diane clashed over the treatment of a patient with ulcerative colitis, and, after Diane agreed to lie to the patient's spouse about his admission, Diane took umbrage when Jac suggested her judgement was being clouded by the recent breakdown of her marriage to Owen Davis. In a conversation with Ric, Diane branded Jac as "blunt", "abrasive" and "patronising", and said that she would not be happy with Jac locuming on Keller again. However, following Jac's success in theatre, Diane praised her surgical skills and claimed that she was pleased that Jac was Keller's locum. (HC: "Yesterday Once More")

After returning to work from weeks of research, Diane was surprised to hear that Jac had secured a permanent post on Keller, and she was irritated when Jac continued calling her "Di" despite being corrected numerous times. In theatre, when Diane struggled to control a patient's internal bleeding, Jac claimed that she could perform a partial hepatectomy and took over. However, Diane was furious when Jac admitted that she had only read about the procedure and managed to stop the bleeds herself. Out of theatre, after overhearing Jac take credit for the procedure, Diane decided to challenge her for the vacant consultant job. (HC: "I'll Be Back")

Feeling as though Diane had favoured status among the panel, Jac was determined to win Ric over by reattaching the arm of a man named Billy. Diane was not optimistic about the blood supply to the arm post-op, but Jac insisted on waiting for signs of improvement. Ultimately, Billy's arm became ischemic and was deemed unviable. As Diane took over the operation from Jac, Ric arrived and mistakenly reprimanded her for endangering Billy's life. Later, Jac admitted that she was responsible. In the end, the consultant job was awarded to an outside candidate - Nick Jordan. (HC: "Out on a Limb")

In October, Jac felt jealous of Diane when she returned from her sabbatical as a close colleague of the eminent Lord Byrne. (HC: "Before a Fall") In January 2007, when Jac expressed her frustration with Dan Clifford and decided to confront him, Diane urged her not to and elected to talk to him on her behalf. However, Jac was disappointed when Dan appointed Diane as Keller's locum consultant. (HC: "Face Value")

Nick Jordan

Nick blackmails Jac into not reporting his actions to Ric. (HC: "Let It Shine")

Sharing a history with Nick, Jac was unhappy to learn in February 2006 that he had been appointed as Keller's new consultant general surgeon (HC: "Out on a Limb") and suspicious of his change in specialities. (HC: "We Gave Her All Our Love") In March, Nick took a keen interest in a patient with a duodenal ulcer who was scheduled for an aortic valve replacement and decided to operate on Darwin, leading Jac to suspect that he was planning on getting back into cardiothoracic surgery. In theatre, Carlo's condition deteriorated, and Nick decided to put him on bypass. Frustrated and concerned about Carlo's wellbeing, Jac brought Connie Beauchamp to the table, but Connie was impressed by Nick's adaptability and allowed him to assist on the valve replacement. After surgery, Nick admitted that he wanted to return to cardiothoracics and threatened to report Jac for failing to disclose her lack of experience in Carlo's procedure if she informed Ric of his actions. (HC: "Let It Shine")

Later that month, Nick continued to show an interest in performing cardiothoracic procedures, and Jac confronted him, but he reasserted his authority and told her to focus on her own pitfalls. When their patient's condition deteriorated further, Jac, instead of consulting Nick, paged Joseph Byrne, a registrar on Darwin who rushed the patient to Darwin for surgery. Once Nick found out, he berated Jac for not informing him and blamed her for the patient's overlooked cardiac issues. (HC: "Snake in the Grass")

In April, following an unsuccessful small bowel transplant, Jac overheard Nick attempting to soil Ric's reputation in front of the patient and warned Ric. (HC: "Honesty") After Nick allowed Diane to take the blame for Helena Bosman's death, Jac viewed Nick as being disloyal and decided to assist Abra out of spite. (HC: "Invasion") Later that month, Jac threatened to disclose the circumstances behind Nick's return to Holby to Lord Byrne to stop him securing the cardiothoracic consultant post at St Luke's Hospital, but Nick suggested that it was a "risky" move and attempted to entice her with the idea of a consultant vacancy on Keller. Regardless, Jac and Ric publicly stated that Nick was fired from St Damian's Hospital after a patient died from a faulty swab count. (HC: "The Truth Will Out") Nick later departed from the hospital after being offered the CT consultant post at St Luke's. (HC: "Extreme Measures")

Dan Clifford

When Dan arrived on Keller in November 2006, Jac took issue with his condescending attitude and — feeling that he was brought in to replace Ric — did not trust him. On the same day, Jac spoke to Dan's ex-fianceé Camilla Patterson who he jilted at the altar, and she was left speechless when Camilla publicly confronted Dan on Keller. (HC: "It's Been a Long Day") Later, Dan suggested that Jac was trying to "create drama" by winding Camilla up, but she denied it. However, as Camilla was being removed from the hospital after tearing up Dan's clothes on the ward, Jac suggested that she report him to the trust. (HC: "The Bitterest Pill")

On 9 January 2007, Jac felt insulted when Dan scathingly said that there was no point in approaching her about applying for a general secretary vacancy at the Surgical Association after she was briefly distracted in theatre. (HC: "The End of the World as We Know It") However, following Abra's resignation, Jac tried to impress Dan by using hypnosis to anaesthetise a patient, but he ultimately appointed Diane. (HC: "Face Value")

Martha Hope

On 14 December 2006, Jac noticed Joseph's friendship with Elliot Hope's daughter Martha and was disappointed to hear that Joseph had invited Martha to a gathering with Lord Byrne and his peers instead. After Martha expressed an interest in dropping out of university and working at the hospital as a healthcare assistant, Jac contacted Andy Zimmerman — an old colleague from St James' Hospital — and managed to secure her a job interview there to separate her from Joseph. However, Elliot informed Martha of a position on Darwin, and she decided to pursue it. (HC: "Crossing the Line")

On 28 December, Jac told Elliot that she had witnessed Joseph and Martha kissing at the Christmas dinner. Later, Martha told Jac that she thought Joseph liked her, but Jac informed her that they were a couple. (HC: "The Very Thought of You") On 4 January 2007, as an errand, Jac told Martha to replace the water in all of the vases on Darwin, resulting in Martha smashing a vase in frustration and cutting her hand. Jac informed Elliot of the incident, and he was horrified to find Joseph and Martha kissing. (HC: "The Games People Play") On 9 January, Martha learned that Jac was the one who brought Elliot to her and Joseph; she tried to warn Joseph that Jac was using him for his family's status, but he refused to listen.
