Josh Hudson (born 25 October 1995) is an F2 doctor who works at Holby City Hospital. He began training at the hospital in July 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in Holby.

Biography[]

Provisional placement at Holby City Hospital[]

Josh was due to begin an eight-week training placement at Holby City Hospital in July 2020 alongside Jeong-Soo Han and Skylar Bryce, but the strain induced by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic saw their medical training postponed. As a result, the prospective F1s spent months of the pandemic performing tasks usually reserved for porters, such as handling patients' belongings. (HC: Episode 1034) In November, when the number of COVID-19 cases diminished, foundation training resumed at the hospital, but Josh, Jeong-Soo and Skylar were informed that only two of them would be offered F1 posts at the end of the placement; the other would be transferred to St James' Hospital. (HC: Episode 1035)

On their first day on the placement, the students were tasked by Kian Madani with working together to diagnose Clayton Pearson — one of Jac Naylor's patients — but tension between Josh and Skylar resulted in the group splintering. Josh suspected that Clayton's symptoms were a result of methamphetamine use, but Jeong-Soo's inclination towards an eating disorder led to the correct diagnosis of a parathyroid gland tumour spreading due to Clayton's consumption of ketogenic diet pills. Despite the correct diagnosis being found, Henrik Hanssen castigated the students for their lack of teamwork and sanctioned them with writing post-op reports. (HC: Episode 1036) In December, Hanssen gave the students three days to deliver a diagnosis and treatment plan for a patient named David Hobbs. After investigating David's symptoms, history and social media, the trio concluded that David was suffering from acute necrotising encephalopathy and that his condition was terminal. The situation taught Josh and the others that a sequence of events can lead to patients' conditions, and they would lose patients for the rest of their careers sometimes for no apparent reason. (HC: Episode 1038) On New Year's Eve, Josh, Jeong-Soo and Skylar successfully completed their first night shift on the Acute Admissions Unit and celebrated by sharing a bottle of champagne stolen from outside CEO Max McGerry's office in the basement. (HC: Episode 1040)

In January 2021, when Skylar attempted suicide and decided to quit after being scapegoated for a patient's death by Cameron Dunn, (HC: Episode 1042) Josh and Jeong-Soo secured the F1 posts by default and started their first rotation on AAU. (HC: Episode 1043)

Sexual relationship with Ange Godard[]

In March, after Ange Godard returned to work prematurely following her drugging and kidnapping by Cameron, Josh was keen to relieve her stress and lessen her workload, but Ange reprimanded Josh when he gave her a wide berth after finding her sobbing in her office and tried to resuscitate a tachycardic patient. Josh took exception to Ange's hostility and affirmed that her staff cared about her in spite of her pride. Ange took Josh to the on-call room, and Josh — fearing that he was about to be fired — apologised and insisted that he cared about her, but Josh's apology prompted Ange to make a pass at him, and the two had sex. (HC: Episode 1052) However, Ange was forced to hand Josh's scrubs over to Kylie Maddon when the former knocked on the door whilst pushing a collection trolley, leading to Josh being caught on the ward wearing only his underwear by Fletch and a group of police officers. (HC: Episode 1053) Despite the close call, Josh and Ange continued to meet up for sex on hospital premises. (HC: Episode 1055)

Hanssen's self-harming[]

In May, after agreeing to meet Ange in the basement to have sex, Josh walked in on Hanssen cutting himself. Hanssen later threatened to ruin Josh's career if he failed to keep the incident private. (HC: Episode 1058) Josh realised that Hanssen had self-harmed before, and he found Hanssen in the basement again after the latter walked out of theatre mid-surgery. Hanssen initially lashed out, but he eventually allowed Josh to suture his wounds and opened up about his feelings regarding him being groomed and raped as a child by Reyhan Shah. Josh empathised with Hanssen's response to his trauma and urged him to reach out for help. Hanssen eventually visited Lucky Simpson — the hospital's mental health nurse — and asked her for help. (HC: Episode 1059)

Getting serious with Ange[]

As the months progressed, Ange began to doubt her decision to keep her relationship with Josh open, so Josh offered to accompany Ange and her daughter Chloe to Albie's. Ange left early to deal with her car's alarm going off, and Chloe offered to take Josh home with her; a frazzled Josh lied and claimed to be working an early shift. (HC: Episode 1060) Josh felt awkward when Chloe started messaging him with romantic intent, and tried to tell Ange, but Ange — unaware that Josh was talking about her daughter — affirmed that she was fine with it and claimed to have been asked out herself. Ange later admitted that she lied about being asked out and expressed her desire to have a monogomous relationship with Josh who concurred. After having sex in the on-call room, Josh and Ange ignored Dominic ― Ange's biological son and a consultant — and Chloe's calls and returned to the ward together; unbeknownst to them, Dominic and Chloe heard and witnessed them together. (HC: Episode 1061)

In June, Josh and Ange were questioned by Hanssen — the hospital's new CEO — about their relationship after being reported by Dominic. (HC: Episode 1062, Episode 1063) Josh was unbothered by the situation and wanted to continue, (HC: Episode 1062) but Ange was forced to assure Hanssen that their relationship was over to avoid any formal repercussions. In an attempt to preserve their relationship, Josh initiated a transfer to St James', but Ange insisted that they were finished irrespective of where each other worked. (HC: Episode 1063) However, after performing a caesarean and saving the mother from subsequent complications together, Ange kissed Josh and convinced him to stay and be with her. (HC: Episode 1064)

Ange's pregnancy and premature caesarean[]

In July, Josh's mother Elaine was admitted to AAU after collapsing in her living room. Elaine was shocked at the difference in age between Josh and Ange, and wanted Josh to enjoy his youth. When Ange tried to break up with Josh for that reason, Josh quickly recognised Elaine's influence on Ange's decision and told his mother when she came out of theatre that he loved Ange and was responsible for his own choices. Elaine finally decided to trust Josh's judgement. Josh reassured Ange that he did not care about her menopause, but Rory Lycett — a CQC inspector — noticed Ange's symptoms and praised her for running a ward whilst pregnant; a test confirmed Rory's assumption. (HC: Episode 1066)

Ange decided to keep her pregnancy a secret from Josh whilst she considered a termination, but Kylie accidentally leaked the news to Josh who was disappointed that Ange felt that she could not tell him. Ange explained that, given his age and Elaine's condition, she did not want to burden Josh with the news, and she was unsure about her own feelings about the situation, but Josh vowed to support her regardless of her decision. (HC: Episode 1067) Ange eventually decided against the termination, and gave Josh a choice between helping her raise the baby and leaving her as a single mother to pursue the joys of youth. Josh believed that he was capable of being a father and told Ange at a fundraising event that he had enough love for both her and their baby. Josh later accompanied Ange to radiology for an ultrasound. To their shock, the scans showed that Ange was carrying twins. (HC: Episode 1068)

18 weeks in Ange's pregnancy, her blood test results showed that she had contracted parvovirus B19 which put the babies at risk of developing anaemia. Ange and Josh were warned that their children would require blood transfusionss if they developed anaemia, and there was a possibility of an early birth. (HC: Episode 1069)

Ange was scheduled for a transfusion performed by Frazer Forbes on 31 August. During the procedure, Ange experienced a placental abruption, so a caesarean was required to save her and the twins. However, an improvised bomb constructed by Cameron Dunn detonated in the basement, damaging the operating theatre (HC: Episode 1075) and incapacitating Frazer. Josh and Chloe had no choice but to complete the caesarean themselves. They successfully delivered the babies — a girl and a boy — and Ange stabilised after being rescued just in time. Once Ange regained consciousness, Josh introduced her to their children on NICU, and the couple reaffirmed their love. Shortly before Chloe left the country to work in Switzerland, Josh and Ange allowed her to name the girl, and Chloe chose the name "Isabella". (HC: Episode 1076) Two days later, they decided on the name "Alastair" for their son. (HC: Episode 1077)

In the days following the caesarean, Josh wanted to appear strong for Ange and took the initiative when it came to creating a family home, such as ordering a king-sized bed, but he admitted to Eli Ebrahimi — the clinical lead of Darwin Ward, where Josh was set to train for his next rotation — that his lack of control over the babies' conditions often left him feeling helpless. Elaine recognised the façade and was concerned about Josh, but Josh insisted that she was reaching for non-sequitirs. Eli urged Josh to tell Ange about how he was feeling, but Josh bottled it when he shared a tender moment with Ange holding their children for the first time. (HC: Episode 1078)
