Nurses are required to wear blue scrubs for work. Charlie wears dark blue scrubs as he is an Emergency Nurse Practitioner alongside his position of Senior Charge Nurse. Meanwhile, Robyn Miller and David Hide wear regular light blue scrubs as they are staff nurses; Jacob Masters also wears light blue scrubs despite being a senior nurse, Tess Bateman wore the same colour of scrubs as Charlie, which at the time were lighter blue scrubs, as well as wearing the clinical nurse manager uniform which is a dark blue shirt with a thick white line around the cuffs and neck. Ben "Lofty" Chiltern held the same position as Jacob for a brief period but still wore regular light blue scrubs, possibly implying the rank-uniform link is just a choice.
The clinical nurse manager of the emergency department is in charge of the nurses, their duties also include enforcing the code of conduct, managing rotas and reporting back to the Clinical Lead. When Rita Freeman left Holby, the role of acting clinical nurse manager went to Jacob Masters, although he wasn't formally given the role until after eventually being selected by Henrik Hanssen. When Jacob resigned, Charlie became clinical nurse manager once again and still had the role of Emergency Nurse Practitioner.
As with most UK hospitals, Holby General's nurses are each allocated a pay band going from band 5 (Staff Nurse) who have no additional responsibilities to their role, to band 6 (Senior Staff Nurse) who are often are in charge of managing certain situations for a short time period while being overseen, to band 7 (Charge Nurse/Ward Manager/Sister) who are usually in charge of smaller departments or certain divisions of larger departments finally to band 8 (Senior Charge Nurse/Senior Ward Manager/Senior Sister) who act in a deputy role to the clinical nurse manager in larger departments and solely run certain aspects of departments, for instance medication or can be found running small to medium-sized departments. Clinical nurse managers are not usually on the ward nurse pay scale and instead work on a management pay scale.
