Series 37 of Casualty ran from 20 August 2022 to 19 August 2023; it comprised 43 episodes. Jon Sen continued in the role of executive producer, whereas Loretta Preece left the role of series producer after episode 2 and was replaced by Liza Mellody.
In a move by Sen to create more "jumping-on points" for prospective Casualty fans, the series format was changed from the beginning of 2023, with episodes being divided into miniseries or "mini-arcs". Series 37 contained two complete miniseries — In Plain Sight and Welcome to the Warzone — and five episodes of the Driving Force miniseries which continued into series 38.

Series 37 saw episodes return to being 50 minutes in length.[1] The move was confirmed prior the series' premiere in July 2022 when George Rainsford responded to a fan's query on Twitter.[2] The average runtime of episodes had been reduced since the beginning of production of series 35 in September 2020 as a result of "comprehensive" production protocols designed to comply with contemporary government guidelines for minimising COVID-19 transmission.[3]
Miniseries format[]
Having learnt from his tenure as executive producer of EastEnders that prospective viewers were often turned off by the lack of jumping-on points, Jon Sen decided to change the format of Casualty going into 2023. The decision was made to divide series 37 into "mini-arcs" of 12 episodes — with the first to begin airing in January ― and to move away from the guess-the-accident narrative format that Sen felt the show was "very famous for" and made it "too predictable" and inauthentic. With the latter, the series would now focus much more on the patients and how their lives would unfold once they were in the hospital.[4] On Twitter, Thomas Hescott confirmed that an episode he directed would mark the beginning of the first arc.[5]
Filming[]
Filming took place on Dyfried Street in Barry on 23 June 2022.[6]
An "emergency scene" was filmed in Adamsdown Square in Cardiff on 11 July 2022.[7]
Promotion[]
In an interview with Inside Soap published on 15 November, William Beck stated that Casualty "picks up dramatically" around Christmas "with great storylines" and "brilliant guest performances". Milo Clarke confirmed that a almost-wholly "improvised" special episode focusing on the paramedic team and the strain on the NHS would air during the festive period, describing the filming process as "scary but fun".[8] Jon Sen elaborated in an interview published on 25 November, stating that the actors were asked to improvise "along themes" which Sen felt helped access the truth of the challenges faced by the ambulance services, particularly response times.[4]
Broadcast[]
Schedule changes[]
"Derby Day" — the fifth episode of the series — was originally scheduled to be broadcast on 10 September on BBC One. However, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September and the channel's shift towards tributary programming in response, the episode was instead shown on BBC Two.[9]
Autumn break[]
Following the broadcast of "Just Between Us" on 8 October, a new episode of Casualty was not broadcast until "People Skills" on 19 November.[10][11] The show usually went off the air for a week in November to make room for coverage of the Royal British Legion's annual Festival of Remembrance,[12][13] but a break of six weeks at that time of year was unprecedented. William Beck and Elinor Lawless stated in late October that the show would return in November, notwithstanding unforeseen schedule changes.[14]
