"Silent Night" is the 16th episode of series 21 of Casualty, and the 557th episode of the show overall. It was directed by Diarmuid Lawrence and written by Barbara Machin. Following "Killing Me Softly", it is the second part of the story that aired at Christmas 2006.

Whereas the plot of "Killing Me Softly" was presented from the perspectives of three different characters — Josh Griffiths, Ellen Zitek and Laura Merriman specifically — this episode employed flashbacks to converge the separate storylines.

The episode saw the debuts of several characters who would go on to make future recurring appearances in Casualty, such as Sarah Evans, Gavin Cook and DCI Jordan. Holly Aird would also reprise her role as Laura Merriman in the 2021 Christmas two-parter "Remember Me". "Silent Night" also featured the death and final appearance of Ellen Zitek, portrayed by Georgina Bouzova.

Synopsis[]

Josh is found badly injured in the back of an ambulance. The outcome looks bleak and, although the team battle to save him, his life is left hanging in the balance.
