Simon Tanner is a nurse who served as the clinical manager of Holby City Hospital's short-lived Minor Injuries Unit, a small private wing of the emergency department.
Biography[]
Simon was employed by the Holby City Hospital board in May 2008 to manage the new Minor Injuries Unit, a small area of the emergency department dedicated to providing treatment at the financial expense of the NHS. Charlie Fairhead — the ED's senior charge nurse and an opponent of the unit's existence — immediately took issue with Simon viewing patients as customers and persuading waiting patients to use the MIU. Simon convinced a patient named Bob Forrester to use the MIU. As a result of receptionist Noel Garcia having to handle two different sets of patient paperwork, Simon was given the clinical notes for Bob's brother Gary which caused Bob to experience an oculogyric crisis, an adverse reaction to prochlorperazine which was documented in his medical history. Charlie took Simon to task for the error, but it soon transpired that Charlie had missed Bob's ruptured spleen during his initial examination. Simon demanded an apology for Charlie's insinuation of incompetence, which Charlie eventually offered, but Simon's indifference towards the value of the nursing profession prompted Charlie to declare his intent to have Simon removed from the ED. (CAS: "Opposing Forces")
In June, the arrival of new equipment in the clinic raised Charlie's suspicions that Simon was being bribed by an equipment supplier. Simon later accused Charlie of positioning the ED staff against him. (CAS: "Have a Go, Hero")
Simon later found himself in trouble when a patient named Kris Kemp died as a result of his negligence. Despite registrar Maggie Coldwell ordering the correct medical tests for Kris, Simon convinced Kris that he d id not need them. Following Kris' death, desperate to cover up his mistakes, Simon tampered with Kris' medical notes to suggest that Maggie never ordered the tests. (CAS: "They May Not Mean To but They Do")
Simon admitted the truth to Marilyn Fox who endeavoured to cover up Simon's lies. Marilyn blackmailed Zoe Hanna into staying silent when the latter discovered the forgery, saying she would expose her affair with Sean Anderson if she revealed anything. (CAS: "The Things We Do For...")
Simon's forgery was publicly revealed as a coroner's court inquest into Kris' death. (CAS: "This Mess We're In - Part Two"). By September, the Minor Injuries Unit was dismantled, and Simon was no longer working in the emergency department. (CAS: "Farmead Menace - Part One")
