Holby Wiki - Casualty and Holby City

Tariq Hussein is an ST1 doctor training in Holby City Hospital's Emergency Department. He joined the department in March 2024. He is the cousin of fellow ED doctor Rashid Masum.

Biography[]

Training in Australia[]

Tariq relocated to Australia from England to complete his medical training. (CAS: "Haunted") An incident occurred when Tariq had sex with one of his female patients. Despite Tariq's insistence that it was consensual, his patient accused him of being violent with her. The hospital Tariq was training at promptly asked him to leave. (CAS: "Downfall")

Return to the UK[]

In 2024, Tariq returned to the United Kingdom to attend the Janāzah of his uncle Ashok Masum. There, he comforted his cousin Rash and helped him purify Ashok's body. Following the funeral, Tariq defended Rida Amaan — Ashok's carer and the one Rash believed was responsible for his death — after Rash did not invite, but Rash asserted that neither of them knew what he was going through. (CAS: "Haunted")

Tariq remained in Holby and was recruited at Holby City Hospital's Emergency Department as an ST1 doctor in March. Rash returned to work from his compassionate leave a week into Tariq's employment. Due to his ongoing grief for Ashok and the overwhelming and degrading state of the ED, Rash had a breakdown and started a fire in a store cupboard to draw attention to a broken smoke alarm. Tariq pushed Rash out of the way and extinguished the fire, and tried to cover for Rash in front of Clinical Lead Patrick Onley; the cause of the fire was apparent. (CAS: "System Failure")

Tariq was keen to offer Rash his support and, after his attempt at finding somewhere to live had fallen through, persuaded Rash to let him be his housemate. (CAS: "Core Wounds") However, Rash soon grew weary of Tariq's "selfish" habits such as leaving perishable food out and not cleaning up after himself. Following an incident on a bus where Tariq rendered first aid to a woman named Riley who was seemingly having a miscarriage, Rash treated Riley and found that she was experiencing a molar pregnancy. Tariq unintentionally broke the news to Riley and candidly brought up the possibility of her needing a hysterectomy which frightened and enraged Riley. Tariq was remorseful, but Rash pulled his cousin up on his unearned "swagger" and branded him a "mediocre" doctor. Riley ultimately vouched for Tariq, explaining that he was the only person who showed concern for her on the bus, so Rash apologised to Tariq and acknowledged his own mistakes handling Riley's case. (CAS: "Childhood's End")

Rash's suicide attempt[]

A television documentary was broadcast exposing the failings of the Emergency Department using leaked bodycam footage. (CAS: "The Whistleblower") After Rash witnessed Patrick concealing evidence of a mistake that had caused the deterioration of a patient, (CAS: "The Longest Shift") Patrick targeted Rash with accusations of whistleblowing which compounded his depression. Tariq refused to entertain the notion that Rash was the whistleblower; taking such measures went against what Tariq perceived was Rash's personality. (CAS: "Shame the Devil") As Rash became the recipient of increased scrutiny, Tariq's assessment of the situation changed, and he encouraged his cousin to come forward. Rash believed that Tariq was trying to curry favour with Patrick for the sake of his own career, and dismissed Tariq's expression of genuine concern about his mental health thinking it was influenced by Patrick. Tariq vouched for Rash's innocence to Patrick and suggested that his cousin needed some help. Unmoved by Tariq's defence, Patrick retaliated by giving fellow ST1 Nicole Piper preferential treatment in resus. Patrick ultimately lost the confidence of Tariq and the team as a whole after almost fatally botching a chest drain insertion and attempting to push the blame onto Nicole. (CAS: "Red Handed")

Despite Rash's initial claims of innocence, Rash informed Patrick that he was the whistleblower and resigned with immediate effect. Tariq tried to intervene, urging Rash to speak to his union rep, but Rash remained silent as he was escorted out of the ED by hospital security. After Rida publicly admitted that she was the whistleblower, Tariq failed to get hold of Rash by phone and returned to their house to assure him that his resignation was unnecessary. However, upon entering Rash's room which was marked with a note urging its reader to call 999 rather than entering, Tariq found Rash unconscious having suffered an overdose. Tariq began attempting to resuscitate Rash and later assisted paramedic Iain Dean in his attempts to revive Rash. After achieving a return of spontaneous circulation, a traumatised Tariq accompanied Rash back to the ED and walked away overwhelmed when Rash rearrested. After Rash was stabilised and moved to ITU, Iain informed Tariq and provided the perplexed doctor with insight into Rash's motivations for hiding the extent of his negative feelings from him. Tariq visited Rash in ITU and prayed for him with Rida. (CAS: "The Last Post")
