Template:EpisodeBoxNew28 "Valves to Vagrants" is the 31st episode of the 28th series of Casualty. It was preceded by "The Lies We Tell" and followed by "The Quiet Man". The episode was directed by Lee Haven Jones and written by Tony McHale. Amanda Mealing made her first appearance as Connie Beauchamp as a regular character in this episode.

Synopsis

Connie Beauchamp arrives for work at the ED raring to go. She immediately starts her shift, as Zoe hasn't yet arrived. She starts by treating a teenage girl who has taken pills in order to help her study but has suffered from the side effects of taking too many. Elsewhere, Zoe is held up at the scene of a car accident involving one of Ash's daughter's friends and her father.

Zoe eventually makes it into the ED for her shift and is shocked to discover Connie has already settled in and begun her shift. She confronts her in resus but Connie puts it down to disorganisation on Guy Self's part. Zoe says she's going to speak to Guy herself. Meanwhile, a local man, Grant, is on the run from two law enforcement agents who have an arrest warrant for him for a crime he says he didn't commit; robbing a bookmakers. They go to his workplace whilst they're setting up for an event, and Grant ascends the scaffolding to escape the agent whilst she's chasing him. Whilst climbing up after him, she falls, injuring her wrist. Tess hears about the incident and tells Robyn that she can attend to gain trauma experience. Connie notices her leaving and asks Zoe if it's standard procedure to go out with the paramedics but she says it isn't as she only allows it in rare circumstances. Connie doesn't see this as a direct instruction and leaves with the paramedics for the scene.

Back at the ED, Ella's friend and her father arrive. Ella calls up inquiring about the well-being of her friend's dad. Things get even stranger when Ella turns up at the ED looking for him, and she later reveals to Ash that they're in a relationship. Ash confronts him and he tells him they just kissed. Either way, Ash informs him that he will be reporting it to the school where he also teaches. Zoe meets with Guy, and he tells her that Connie was in his office by coincidence and he decided to offer her the new consultant job going in the ED. He explains to her that she's now a fully qualified consultant in emergency medicine and is one of the best surgeons the hospital has ever had.

Connie. Robyn and the paramedics arrive at the scene of the accident and find themselves relatively usesless due to the fact only one minor injury was reported. However Robyn soon notices Grant who has become stuck in the scaffolding above the stage and passed out. Connie climbs up to help him, and Jeff follows closely after. Connie suspects he is suffering from suspension syndrome and climbs across to help him. They manage to get a crane and get Grant onto it, and the scaffolding slips down slightly afterwards, scaring Connie. Eventually Connie is saved by Jeff who manages to pull her up onto the crane platform and get her to safety.

Once back at the ED, Connie tells the policewoman that she highly doubts that Grant was the man on the CCTV footage they have as evidence of the robbery as he has an underlying condition which would make it near impossible for him to run as far as they claim he did. Just as Connie is preparing to leave for the day, the man of the teenage girl Connie treated earlier arrives demanding to speak with her. Despite his threats to make a formal complaint, Connie soon settles the situation by providing the receipt, proving that they're legal pills and also that they'd been purchased by his son his father's credit card. At the end of the day, Connie goes into Zoe's office for a talk. Zoe is busy at work and keeps her waiting, leaving Connie unsatisfied. Template:Series 28
